How To Tighten a Loose Towel Bar

Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How To Tighten a Loose Towel Bar

All too often, bars and holders in the bathroom start to jiggle over time, especially in a bathroom that gets a lot of action.

CONSIDER THIS

There are several ways to install towel bars and toilet-paper holders. Today, most have mounting brackets that the unit is fastened to; this project addresses this type of bar and holder. If your bar or holder has loosened because the mounting bracket has pulled out from the wall, the project gets a bit more complicated. The brackets will need to be remounted in fresh holes.

THE PROJECT

1. Locate the set-screw, which is usually hidden at the bottom of the decorative cover. The photo shows the top of the cover.

2. Peek under and see if it’s a hex-type or flathead-type set screw—the mirror can help here.
3. If it’s a hex type, fi t test various hex keys to see which one is the right size.
4. Turn the set-screw counterclockwise (from an underneath orientation) and tighten it back onto the mounting bracket. This may take loosening the screw first, adjusting the cover so that it sits properly on the bracket, and then retightening the set-screw.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Set of Allen wrench (hex keys) or jeweler’s
screwdriver depending on your type of
set-screw
Handheld mirror
