Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How to Install Kitchen Vertical Dividers
Cut two MDF panels to fit the inside dimensions of the top and bottom of the cabinet. On one of the pieces, mark the locations of the divider slots using any spacing you like. Note: With traditional face-frame cabinets, you may need extra MDF pieces or lumber spacers behind the slotted piece so that the slots extend below the face-frame overhang.
Clamp the MDF pieces to a bench with their faces up and their edges aligned. Using a router and a straightedge guide, mill a 5⁄16"-wide × 3⁄16"-deep groove into both pieces at each slot location. If the cabinet has a center partition (middle stile), cut the pieces in half so you’ll be able to fit them into the cabinet.
Install the top and bottom pieces into the cabinet so the slots are aligned. Fasten the top piece in place with screws. Measure vertically between the slot bottoms, then cut the divider panels 1⁄16" shorter than this dimension. Slide the panels into place at the desired spacing.
Variation: For a cabinet with a deep overhanging face-frame, you can save headroom by using slotted 1 × 2 or 2 × 2 cleats to hold the panels instead of solid top and bottom pieces. Mill the cleats with a router and fasten them to the cabinet with screws.
