Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : Replace a Vanity Light Fixture 02
PREP WORK
• First shut off the power to the light from the service panel.
• Removing the old fixture will vary depending on what type of light you have. Generally, you first need to remove the globe (diffuser) or light cover, and then the light bulbs.
• After you’ve removed the globe and bulb(s), there may be nuts that secure the fixture base to the wall. Unscrew them and pull the fixture away from the wall. If the fixture has been caulked or painted, it may help to run a utility knife around the seam where the fixture meets the wall (being careful not to damage the wall).
• Pulling out the fixture should reveal wires, an electrical box, and potentially a round mounting plate or strap. Mentally note how the wires are connected—usually black to black, white to white, ground to ground (green or copper)— because you’ll need to repeat the same wiring.
• With an electric tester, recheck to make sure that the power is off . Hold the tester up to the wires— no light or ringing indicates no power.
• Unscrew the wire nuts and disconnect the fixture. Set the fixture aside. It’s good practice to reconnect the wire nuts to the now single wires.
• If there’s a mounting plate that is similar to the new one, you may leave the old. If not, remove it.
• A bare copper ground wire may be screwed to the inside of the electrical box—disconnect it.
• You should now have a black, white, and ground wire coming out of your electric box.
