How To Patch Holes in Drywall Part 01

Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How To Patch Holes in Drywall Part 01

I find that holes in bathroom walls are prevalent. Towel bars loosen and pull out. So do toilet-paper holders, shower rods, decorative objects, shelf placements—there are lots of opportunities for holes to pop up all around the bathroom. I recently patched a hole in my master bath when I changed the position of the light fixture over my vanity.

How To Patching small holes (1–3 inches)

PREP WORK

• Put down newspaper or an old towel to protect the floor beneath the hole.
• With the utility knife, cut out any bits of drywall that are protruding out of the hole.

• Lightly scuff up the painted area around the hole with the sandpaper (about an inch around).

1. Place a piece of nylon mesh tape over the hole. For very small holes (like from a screw and plastic anchor), this step is not necessary.

2. With a dab of spackle on your putty knife, smear the spackle over the hole and tape.

3. Smooth out the spackle and let it dry. If, when it’s dry, you see that another coat is needed, sand lightly and pass another coat.
4. When it’s completely dry, sand any raised edges, prime, and paint.
