Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How To Patch Holes in Drywall Part 03
THE PROJECT: Patching large holes (smaller than 8 inches)
PREPARATION
• Put down newspaper or an old towel to protect the floor beneath the hole.
• With a level to mark straight lines, cut out a clean square around the hole. Lightly scuff up the painted area around the square with the sandpaper (about an inch around).
• Take the measurements of the square opening, and then trace and cut a scrap piece of drywall to those dimensions (cut on the inside of the pencil line so the square is slightly smaller than the hole). Now you have your patch square.
• Cut a length of two-by-four, 4 inches longer than the hole.
1. Insert the first two-by-four into the hole. Line up the fl at side of the two-by-four on one side of the opening.
2. Secure the two-by-four to the wall by driving a screw into the two-by-four above and below the hole. Note: For a smaller hole (6–8 inches), one two-by-four centered in the opening will suffice. Drive a screw halfway in the middle of the two-by-four to use as a handle so that it doesn’t drop behind the drywall as you’re screwing it in place.
3. Secure the second two-by-four to the other side of the opening in the same manner.
4. Insert the patch square into the hole and screw it to the two-by fours with a couple of screws on each side.
5. Put nylon mesh tape over each joint
and, with a putty knife, smear joint compound over each seam. Let it dry.
6. Sand any raised edges and pass another coat of joint compound over the entire patch, being sure to feather out the edges. Once dry, repeat this step for your fi nal coat.
7. When it’s completely dry, sand smooth, prime, and paint.
