Toilet Maintenance Part 01

Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : Toilet Maintenance Part 01

There are several little maintenance tips you should know about to keep your toilet fresh and up and
running—or should I say not running, as in the annoying jiggle-the-handle kind.

How To Cleaning The Valve Seat

Sometimes all that’s causing the toilet to run is a faulty seal around the valve seat. Over time, gunk will form around the valve seat and fl apper. Th is will not allow the flapper to seal properly, which will cause the water to run out of the tank into the bowl when it’s not supposed to.

PREP WORK

In order to do this project, you need to work with an empty tank.

1. With the tank empty, lift the flapper to review the valve seat. Pull off the fl apper from the overflow tube; it may be hooked in place with “wings” on either side of it or have a large thick ring that will be pulled up and over the tube.
2. Scrub the entire lip of the valve seat with steel wool.

3. Scrub the underside of the flapper.

4. Reattach the flapper to the overflow tube.
5. Turn the water back on and give it a flush.
