How To Replace a Toilet Seat Part 01

Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How To Replace a Toilet Seat Part 01

Nothing screams “disgusting” more than a cruddy old toilet seat. I remember once sitting on one that scarred me, literally. Although it wasn’t dirty, it did have a hairline crack in it. Th e crack slit open as I sat down, and then pinched closed right on my butt cheek. Ouch! Promise me you won’t subject anyone to disgust or pain when they use your toilet. Th is project is very basic, so if your toilet seat is less than perfect, change it!

CONSIDER

When choosing a new seat, the only thing you need to know in advance is whether your toilet is round or elongated. You can purchase a custom fi t and color seat from your toilet’s manufacturer, but they typically cost more.

PREP WORK

• Remove the old seat by unscrewing the mounting bolts. They’re sometimes hidden behind plastic caps. If applicable, pry up the caps with a fl athead screwdriver and unscrew the bolts. Depending on your seat type, you remove the bolt by unscrewing the nuts from underneath.

• Unscrew the bolts completely, remove the old washers and nuts, and lift out the seat.
• If the bolts are just spinning but not unscrewing, you’ll need to hold back the nut from underneath with an adjustable wrench.
• If the bolts are rusty and stubborn, spray them with lubricating spray and let them soak for several minutes.
Then go back and give it a whirl.
• If the bolts are truly stuck, they may need to be cut off with a mini hacksaw. Use duct tape to protect
areas that may be hit with the saw as you’re sawing off the old bolts.
