How To Plunge a Toilet

Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How To Plunge a Toilet

It’s a nasty job, but somebody’s got to do it.

CONSIDER THIS

Do not try to plunge a bowl that is almost full. Wait for the water to drain down before starting to plunge.

PREP WORK

The rubber of the plunger should be covered with water to work best. Add water to the bowl if necessary.

How To

1. Lift the toilet seat and insert the funnel of the plunger deep into the drain outlet so that it creates a seal.
2. Thrust the plunger up and down rapidly, being sure to create strong suction and pressure. After doing this several times, swiftly pull the plunger up and out of the water.

3. Continue doing this until the clog breaks and the water begins to go down.
4. Test to see if the clog is cleared by pouring a bucket of water down the bowl. I like a bucket better than flushing because if you try to fl ush at this point and it’s not really unclogged yet, you run the risk of the bowl overfl owing (unless you quickly shut off the water from the valve).
5. Continue plunging if it’s still not cleared
