How To Replace a Flush Handle

Kitchen And Bathroom Renovation : How To Replace a Flush Handle

I’m no superman, but I’ve managed to crack a plastic flush handle right off the toilet. (It happened to be on the first visit to my boyfriend’s house—wasn’t I embarrassed.) Whether it’s broken or you just want it to match your new oil-bronzed faucet and towel rack, replacing a flush handle is as simple as it gets.

CONSIDER

Be sure to bring the old fl ush handle with you to the plumbing supply store for a proper replacement. The length of the trip arm and size and shape of the handle (that fi ts in the toilet cutout) must match perfectly in order for the handle to work properly. Why mess with trying to alter the cutout or length of the arm when you can just buy the right one from the start?

PREP WORK

• To remove the old handle, you need to know this tidbit—the fitting on a fl ush handle has reverse threads. This means that in order to unscrew it, you need to turn the fi tting clockwise, not counterclockwise. (So the lefty loosey, righty tighty rule goes out the window!)
• First, lift the chain or disconnect the wire off of the lift arm.

• Unscrew the handle nut, clockwise, with your wrench or pliers.

• Pull out the handle and lift arm and take the entire assembly to the plumbing store to buy a replacement.

HOW TO

1. Insert the new lift arm through the hole.

2. Screw the nut, counterclockwise, onto the handle.
3. Reattach the chain or wire to the lift arm.
4. Flush and adjust the wire or chain if necessary.
